Should we auto-close questions if they are covered by the FAQ?
In the past when I’ve answered questions I often have struggled to make the question a good fit for the site. I’m still learning about the site, but I can see some patterns. Some questions are incomplete, or there is a lack of research done by the asker (by providing an example of a set of requirements, and then showing no research into what methods exist to meet those requirements) etc.
When I ask questions I often include some details about the problem domain, so that I have a frame of reference, or if I’m having a hard time coming up with the right wording, I ask myself “what questions does this have the potential to attract?”
In many cases I can see an obvious “angle” to the question, and therefore see an obvious path to solving the problem quickly. I’ll state the question and usually have my answer ready. Then later someone will comment:
“This is really the XYZ”, rather than:
“How do I do this without XYZ?”
Now these are questions about software design and programming, the kind of questions that are covered by the FAQ and low in signal to noise ratio. Should we then auto-close them, as they are obviously covered by the FAQ? Or should we do nothing about them?
I’m thinking at the moment, that if there are no comments that the question should be closed.
I often struggle with the same issues, and I usually work through them by:
Either reading through the FAQ, and adding links to relevant sections as
